What are the Benefits of Singing?

There are so many benefits to singing! It’s Fun! It releases endorphins and makes you happy, improving your mood. But other benefits include:

  • Reducing stress & anxiety
  • Helps develop relationships
  • Improves Confidence and self-esteem
  • Helps you escape
  • Helps with sleeping

There are also benefits for your babies & children when you singing too!

Babies much prefer the sound of your voice and prefer it over recorded music – whether you think you can sing or not! It’s music to your babies ears!

  • It also helps calm them
  • Builds attachment between mother & baby
  • Helps with sleeping and feeding
  • Prepares their ears, voice and brain for language, reducing the risk of language problems later in life.

It’s really great as a new mum to be at a relaxed, non-judgemental group where it doesn’t matter if you sing out of tune, or out of time….which I do sometimes! It’s amazing what an hour of singing can do for you, it really does lift you, the babies enjoy it, and often sit, look and listen to us!

Soul Singers is a place to go if you love to sing and want a small, kind group of women to support you day on day. It really is such an amazing community, inspiring, confidence building, and creating lasting friendships. I have helped on fundraisers for Devon Mind, attended groups with lovely people and had Zoom and Tuneful Tuesday to help through Lockdown which was lonely for us all. Give it a try. Mary is amazing, it’s just fun, and we all need that in our lives.

Each Tuesday morning we have been joining in with Soul Singers toddler sessions. It’s so lovely to see lots of happy faces and Mary-Jane is ever so welcoming. We love running around gathering props for our songs before hand as it is very organised with handy hints of what you may need. My daughter enjoys seeing her friend and doing the actions. Mary-Jane doesn’t mind giving it welly, she just wants lots of fun to b had for children and adults. Thank you Mary-Jane, we love coming.x

“After having my first child I lost a lot of confidence and my anxiety levels increased. Singing & Music has always been an important part of my life and Soul Singers formed as part of my journey of rediscovering who I was after leaving a long career in education. I love working with Mums and their children. The impact of singing is so positive and powerful. It is such a privilege to sing with Mums each week and I love seeing how lifelong relationships have been created through Soul Singers as well as how each Mums confidence improves”

Mary-Jane Saunders – Director of Soul Singers CIC

“I strongly believe that singing and music are good for the soul. After a long day, I am often to be found singing and enjoying a kitchen disco with my two daughters in our house in Bristol. My background is in psychology and education and I have always used music and sung with the children I work with. My experience has shown me how naturally and innately we all respond to music.”

Cath Sands – Director of Soul Singers CIC

“I am a humanistic counsellor in Eastbourne and specialise in mental health. I have a passion for working with people; especially with promoting positive mental wellbeing and working to reduce the stigma around mental health. I feel this is so important with everything that is going on in the world right now, it’s definitely ok not to be ok. I got involved with Soul Singers because I really believe in the ethos of supporting positive mental well-being through singing.”

Laura Lambert – Director of Soul Singers CIC

“I am a busy mum to 2 children and 1 dog. I love singing and have sung in choirs in the past but simply don’t have the time right now. I do sing around the house and in the car but usually get told off by my children for it. My dog doesn’t seem to mind!

I have recently realised that mental health is my passion and so am currently training to be an integrative counsellor. I am very excited to be involved in Soul Singers as I truly believe it has the power to make a positive impact on so many lives.”
